Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak has been forced to withdraw from the Sweden squad due to an injury.
The 22-year-old swapped Real Sociedad for the Magpies in the last window and Janne Andersson had included him in the squad to face Serbia and Slovenia in the UEFA Nations League this month.
The Newcastle player picked up an injury in training on Wednesday and latest test results have shown he will have to withdraw from the squad. This news has been confirmed by the Svenska Fotbollförbundet [Swedish football association] on their official website.
“Alexander Isak missed Wednesday’s training due to a bruise. On Wednesday evening, Alexander was examined by, among others, our medical team and it was established that he will not be available for games against either Serbia or Slovenia. Alexander will therefore leave the squad,” a statement read on SvFF’s official website.
Earlier this month, Andersson had urged the Magpies frontman to take more responsibility with the national team.
The Sweden manager has now expressed his disappointment with the latest setback suffered by the player.
“It is of course sad mainly for Alex but also for us as a team. But after speaking with both our medical team and Alex, it is the right decision for him to leave. I hope he is back as soon as possible. Currently, we will not take out any new players. Now the full focus is on the preparations against Serbia on Saturday,” Andersson explained.
Eddie Howe’s man also expressed his disappointment over missing the upcoming fixtures with his country.
“It feels very sad to have to leave the team. I had longed to play in the blue and yellow shirt again. I wish the boys the best of luck on Saturday and Tuesday,” the Swede explained.
Newcastle face Fulham on October 1st and it remains to be seen whether Isak will be fit on time for the next league clash.
