Liverpool should ignore any idea of hiring Xabi Alonso and instead focus on getting Roberto de Zerbi from Brighton and Hove Albion.
That’s according to journalist Gianluigi Longari, who believes the Italian coach is the ideal man for Liverpool and even Barcelona.
The two clubs are set to be on the hunt for a new manager in the summer, with Jurgen Klopp and Xavi having announced their intentions to step down from Liverpool and Barcelona at the end of the season.
The race is now on to find their replacements and De Zerbi has found himself in the mix for both after his impressive 18 months at Brighton.
He joined the Seagulls in September 2022 as Graham Potter’s replacement and hasn’t looked back since, guiding Brighton to Europe for the first time with an exciting, attacking brand of football and continuing their development of young talent.
It’s an appointment that would make plenty of sense according to Longari, who also believes Liverpool should be looking his way.
“A closing on De Zerbi, the coach that I personally would choose both if I were at Liverpool and Barça,” he said.
“The Italian would respect the DNA of both clubs with his ideas of play and would have the possibility of exporting his beliefs also in a club that starts with the aim of winning all the events it takes part in.
“The meeting at the Blaugrana headquarters a few days ago which saw its representatives as protagonists had a different purpose: to talk about Araujo and his possible renewal with the Catalans”.
“The De Zerbi topic was addressed in a momentarily marginal manner, even if there is no closure at all to the prospect that the fairy tale that started in Brescia could one day find a chapter on the Ramblas too. Who knows…”
