Liverpool have been tracking Mainz youngster Nelson Weiper for ‘over two years’ but will need more than €20m if they are to sign him at any point.
That’s according to BILD, who cover the player today and say that ‘new requests keep pouring in’ for the player as he continues to shine in Germany.
They explain that Neiper is ‘already making history’ with Mainz, becoming their youngest ever goal scorer with a striker in the clash against Borussia Mönchengladbach this season.
The belief is that if he continues to develop as he has done in recent year further records will tumble and his stock will continue to rise with them.
The youngster was recently valued at €5m but that is ‘not very realistic’ and BILD have learned that Main wouldn’t even sell him for €15-20m. In fact, experts believe he could be worth up to €50m in the next two years.
Several top clubs from all over Europe have already knocked on their door including Liverpool, who have been ‘really keen’ on Weiper ‘for over two years’ and have already wanted to ‘lure’ him to Anfield.
New requests for him continue to keep arriving and it’s unlikely that will stop before his contract at Mainz expires in 2025.
Fortunately for the German club the player is ‘fully convinced’ that staying at Mainz is right for him, particularly because they have assured him of ‘maximum support and encouragement’.
Indeed, they plan to get him into the first team as soon as possible, a ploy to help his development but also ensure he ignores the likes of Liverpool should they continue to keep calling.
For now, then, he is a name to simply keep an eye on but the Reds, and Klopp, are keen and will surely be keeping watch as he develops next season.
