Aston Villa may be presented with their chance to sign Oscar Mingueza this summer as it is now a case of ‘renewal or sale’ at Celta Vigo for him.

That’s according to Faro de Vigo, who cover the player today and Celta Vigo’s intention to fight for him one way or another.

They explain that the Spanish club have made renewing the defender’s contract a priority as it expires in June 2026. Their sporting directors have already taken steps to achieve this, informing his agents in January that they wanted to do so.

Talks have been on going between the two parties but there’s still no agreement in place and if that remains the case, a sale ‘would be an almost necessary step’. Otherwise, Mingueza could leave on a free next year and negotiate such a deal from January.

This summer would be the last in which they could secure any financial return, even with Barcelona due to receive 50% of any fee.

Mingueza is currently valued at €20m but his rapid progress and growing role for Spain too will only increase that and Celta don’t want to miss out.

They know there will be interest too as Aston Villa pushed to sign him in the January transfer window and will be monitoring the situation around his contract still.

Celta are concerned that he will receive an offer from a major club that they can’t match, a fear they felt in January when it was reported Aston Villa would pay his €20m release clause.

That never happened but it could change in the summer, particularly with his contract yet to be resolved. If it isn’t in the coming months, that makes a transfer a necessity and it’s likely Villa will be waiting in the wings for that point to arrive.
