Dutch pundit Hugo Borst has admitted he was wrong about Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, praising the Dutchman for the work he’s doing at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag endured a difficult start to life in England following his move from Ajax in the summer, losing 2-1 to Brighton and 4-0 to Brentford at the start of the season.
There was also a heavy 6-3 defeat to Manchester City in the first derby of the season, a result which left many questioning if Ten Hag could be a success in the Premier League.
However, United have since bounced back in remarkable fashion, with a win over Pep Guardiola’s side at the weekend their ninth in a row and a result that ensured Ten Hag has reached 20 wins quicker than any of his predecessors.
Plenty are now changing their opinion about the Manchester United boss and Borst is one of them, having questioned the move back in August.
He wrote in an article that Ten Hag’s move was ‘the dumbest move a top Dutch coach ever made’ but has now put his hands up and admitted that was a mistake.
“Saturday’s defeat of great rival Manchester City marked the ninth win in a row,” he wrote in Algemeen Dagblad.
“No manager at this complicated club before him achieved 20 wins so quickly: Ten Hag thus beat both Louis van Gaal and Alex Ferguson.
“The way Ten Hag’s team kept Manchester City in check was impressive. That Erik ten Hag demands this of his players, we know of course. He worked wonders at Ajax.
“Only, that was in the Netherlands. That he achieves this in the league where the best football in the world is played is so clever.
“Manchester United’s transformation is impressive, but it is merely a prelude to what Ten Hag hopes to achieve. The championship will probably come too soon, but the club is on the right track.
“Confession: it was me who lectured Ten Hag back in August, more pedantic than cocky. Feel free to say it was reckless. Shameful. Laughable.”
