PSV Eindhoven can get something from their clash with Newcastle United this week, particularly given their performance against Wolves.
That’s at least according to Pierre Van Hooijdonk. He was left very unimpressed by Newcastle United’s performance in that 0-0 draw. PSV fans relay his comments today.
Newcastle host PSV in the Champions League on Wednesday. They sit 12th in the European table at present, with 10 points from six games to date. A win could see them move into the top eight. PSV are two points behind in 21st place.
Eddie Howe’s side have enjoyed themselves more in Europe than in the Premier League this season. While they sit eighth in the table and just three points outside the top four, there have been murmurings of discontent around St James’ Park.
That is largely due to their away form, which is the 12th best in the league at present. In contrast, they’re in the top six at home. They’ve won just twice away from home all season, drawing four and losing five.
Newcastle United v Wolves compared to Dutch 2nd division
The latest draw was a drab 0-0 with Wolves over the weekend in which they managed just two shots on target against a side rooted to the bottom of the table. Van Hooijdonk was watching that game, and it left him feeling optimistic for PSV.
“I watch very little English football, because I mainly focus on the Dutch league,” he said
“I watched Wolves against Newcastle, which is KKD level (Dutch second tier). I really didn’t like it. I didn’t see any real ingenuity in this match at all. PSV have much more footballing ingenuity.
“The only difference is that physical aspect, and that could cause PSV problems. Otherwise, I think PSV can achieve a positive result there as well.”
Some motivation for Newcastle United there then.
