Reading new boy Roy Beerens has revealed he turned down clubs in the Dutch league to join the Championship side. Beerens yesterday joined up with his compatriot Japp Stam after signing from German side Hertha BSC.

Speaking to Fox Sports, the winger was asked about his reasons for signing for Reading. The 28-year-old revealed he had the option to return to Holland, but wanted to continue to play abroad.

Beerens said he didn’t want to return to his home country because it is no longer competitive, and believes he will get this playing for Reading.

“There were options in the Netherlands, but for me it was soon clear that I wanted to continue my career abroad. With all due respect, the Dutch League it is no longer what it was. I want to be involved in competitive games again, for an important team. At Reading I hope to get back that feeling. Monday, I train for the first time. I look forward to it.” said the Dutchman.

Beerens yesterday joined Reading on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.
