Rangers have parted ways with Russell Martin after a terrible start to the season at Ibrox. Many Rangers fans turned against the manager a while ago and the scenes following the 1-1 draw with Falkirk made it clear the end had been reached.

Rangers then announced Russell Martin’s exit and the attention turned to who would be brought in at Ibrox. A number of names have already been mentioned, with a Steven Gerrard return being pushed by some.

Another name among the eandful considered most likely right now is Danny Röhl. The 36-year-old was linked with Rangers before Russell Martin took over, and is thought to be an option again.

He left Sheffield Wednesday in the summer after a dramatic couple of months of him publicly flirting with Bundesliga clubs as if he were a free agent. Röhl told the German media he had an agreement to leave the Yorkshire club, but that appeared to be news to them.

Danny Röhl has Bundesliga desire

The manager spoke repeatedly about his desire to return to Germany, and that could be a negative in Rangers chances.

In May, he said: “I always want to work with the best players and compete with the best coaches. The Bundesliga is, of course, a top choice. After all, I grew up with the Bundesliga. But the Premier League is also a dream. I’m currently very excited to see what happens this summer.”

Then in June: “The Bundesliga is obviously something special because I grew up with it. For me, it’s always about working at the highest level. I want to compete against the best teams, with the best coaches.”

Over the summer, the manager’s wife and children settled in Leipzig, and Danny Röhl repeatedly pushed himself for the RB Leipzig job… publicly. He insisted the jump from a Championship club to a Champions League club wouldn’t be too big.

That didn’t work out for him, and various other Bundesliga opportunities came and went.

Rangers are therefore up against that understandable Germany desire.
