The sacking of Pedro Caixinha at Rangers has had quite different coverage in Portugal and Mexico.
All the sports outlets in Portugal are reporting the story today, without much information to add, and recalling that the manager spent quite some money to take a few compatriots to the Glasgow club.
They still make it sound like these guys will be fine, though. There’s no immediate Portuguese worry about the Rangers’ futures of Bruno Alves, Dalcio, Fabio Cardoso and Daniel Candeias.
As it stands they’re expected to continue with the Scottish Premiership club until at least the end of the season, and won’t be rushing out of Ibrox immediately.
Players signed by Caixinha have also been mentioned by Mexican outlets, but in a different way. Leaving America, South or Central, to join an European club is still considered a big deal, so there’s quite some concern of what the future of Carls Pena and Eduardo Herrera will be at Rangers.
We had already covered a similar story this Thursday, but these bad feelings have been growing among the local media, with at least two other outlets questioning the same thing today.
The concern is the Mexican players wouldn’t convince a new manager. And website Siete24 lists a few examples of players who struggled after their favourite bosses left their clubs. Like Giovani dos Santos with Frank Rijkaard at Barcelona, Nery Castillo with Sven-Goran Eriksson at Manchester City, dos Santos again with Juande Ramos at Tottenham Hotspur, and Chicharito Hernandez with Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
Apart from the worrying, it sounds like a bit of disbelief from the Mexican media that Pena and Herrera can still succeed at the Rangers. Maybe they’re simply unconvinced Graeme Murty and his successor will pick the pair regularly in the Scottish Premiership.
But it’s obviously a bit too early for that. Caixinha has barely been sacked, and it doesn’t seem like it’s already time to be be concerned. Mexicans should be more patient, there will be time enough for these guys to prove themselves.
