On June 9th, Voetbal Krant reported Rangers plan to hijack KVC Westerlo’s Matija Frigan from Hamburg’s clutches. Five days later, claims from Croatia said Russell Martin’s side are the favourites, ahead of Hull City and others, to sign him this summer.
Croatia’s Germanijak claims Rangers remain an option for the 22-year-old after a failed move to Hull City.
The Championship side are unable to register the striker due to their transfer ban, and that now allows Rangers or another club to sign him.
Elche CF have secured promotion to La Liga and the report focuses on their interest in the Croatian. The Spanish club are said to be expecting to conclude the deal for €6m.
That may not be enough for Elche as Germanijak says the Jupiler Pro League side are asking for around €8m. This would indicate Westerlo are open to selling him in this window.
Germanijak adds Rangers are also showing interest in Frigan and Sunderland are also in the mix. Despite this, Elche seem to be the most concrete option at this moment in time. Russell Martin’s side can get ahead of Elche if they agree to pay €8m to Westerlo.
Frigan scored 14 goals and registered four assists from 41 games last season.
