Rangers could be given a second chance to sign striker David Selke as he eyes up a move in the January transfer window.

That’s according to BILD, who explain the striker’s situation today and how he looks set to move on from Hertha Berlin in search of regular playing time. The newspaper explains that while Selke was in Hertha’s starting 11 for only the second time in the weekend clash with Bayern Munich, that was something of a rarity.

He has only managed 209 minutes in 11 games for his club this season, and that lack of playing time is something he is not happy with. Selke was signed for €8m from RB Leipzig in 2017 but his contract expires this summer and any deal would now be on a free transfer. That’s something they’re unlikely to be happy with, but could present a chance for Rangers.

Hertha would like to get his wages, which are over three million a year, off the books, but believe the player ‘still has a market’ and thus can be sold for some sort of fee.

Several clubs were interested in him in the summer transfer window, including Rangers, who were keen to add him to Giovani van Bronckhorst’s squad and ‘knocked on his door’.

He ‘surprisingly’ turned down the move to Ibrox, though, and all the opportunities that were presented to him at the time. The idea was that he seemed to fancy a move to a different league than the ones on offer.

Empoli and Sampdoria are now courting him and could offer him a move to Italy, which might be more to his taste, although that remains to be seen.

What is clear is that the striker, is ‘looking for a new challenge’ as he wants more playing time to be able to enjoy his football once again.

That’s something Rangers and Van Bronckhorst can offer, meaning they’ve got a second chance at a player they were very keen on in the summer.
