Mazatlán FC midfielder Andrés Montaño is eyeing up a move to Celtic or Rangers this summer, so he can eventually earn himself a move to the Premier League.
That’s according to his agent Rafael Guillén, who insists he wants to see the midfielder playing at Ibrox or Celtic Park next season if he gets his way.
Guillén has been speaking to ESPN about his client and his desire to get him into Philippe Clement’s or Brendan Rodgers’ squad next season, so they can plan a future in the Premier League at some point.
Montaño currently players for Mazatlán FC in LIGA MX in Mexico and has been a regular for them since stepping up from the U20 side in 2022.
Since then, he’s managed eight goals and two assists in 61 games after a 56-game spell with the U20s saw him bagging 21 goals in total.
At 22-years-old he is very much still developing but a potential Mexican star of the future, at least as far as his agents are concerned.
He has interested clubs within his own country, with the likes of Cruz Azul heading up a list of bigger sides ready to take him away from Mazatlán this summer.
Guillén, though, isn’t interested in those moves and instead he and his agency, El Cielo Management, want a move to Scotland, with Celtic or Rangers, because that fits where their future ambitions lie.
“We think that Andrés can play without problems for Celtic, or for Rangers, because of our closeness to them, but they are not the only ones,” he said.
“That is the jump we want for him. It is worth mentioning that there is a scoring system that you need to play in the English league, that depending on the league you come from, you cannot jump; that is why the Scottish league is the best bridge.
“There are five leagues that you can jump into more immediately: Germany, Portugal, Spain, Italy and France, which have a higher level.
“The Scottish league has a lower level that would allow Andrés to play more often. It wouldn’t help us to take the player to a league where he plays intermittently; what we want is for him to play and in Scotland, Andrés can play plenty.”
