Rangers are now closing in on Danilo Pereira’s departure to Botafogo. The Brazilian side have made significant progress in negotiations for the striker.

Earlier this week, reports in Brazil stated Botafogo were working on a season-long loan with an option to buy. Fresh claims now indicate the deal is close to being completed.

Now, journalist Pablo Oliveira reports Botafogo have agreed the framework of a loan for the 27-year-old. Only the final formalities remain before the move is completed. The agreement includes a purchase option.

Rangers ready to cut losses

Danilo Pereira joined Rangers from Feyenoord in 2023 in a deal worth around £6m. He has never managed to establish himself as a consistent first-choice striker at Ibrox.

According to the latest report, Rangers have accepted that any permanent transfer to Botafogo would be worth considerably less than the fee they originally paid.

The purchase option included in the loan is expected to reflect that reality if the Brazilian club decide to make the move permanent next year.

The forward spent the second half of last season on loan at NEC Nijmegen after falling down the pecking order in Glasgow. Across the 2025-26 campaign he made 40 appearances for Rangers and NEC combined. He scored five goals.

McInnes gives green light

Pablo Oliveira also reports Derek McInnes has approved Danilo Pereira’s departure. This suggests the Rangers manager does not see the Brazilian as part of his plans for the coming season.

That decision clears the path for Botafogo. The club have been searching for extra attacking depth despite Arthur Cabral’s status as their first-choice striker.

Unless there is a late twist, Danilo now appears set to return to Brazilian football for the first time since leaving for Ajax’s academy as a teenager. Rangers, meanwhile, will hope regular football increases his value, even if the agreed purchase option is already expected to be well below the £6m they invested three years ago.
