Over the past couple of weeks, Rangers have been mentioned as candidates to sign Genoa’s Emil Bohinen. Danny Röhl is in the process of improving his squad for a Scottish Premiership title fight, and Bohinen has been targeted for a move to Ibrox.

Now, there is a possibility of the midfielder joining Derby County, where his father played over 50 games between 1998 and 2001. For context, Secolo XIX reported last week that the Norwegian’s entourage will make a decision over his future on Monday.

There was interest from not just Rangers but also Spezia and Bari. The Italian press had been leaking contradicting information about the midfielder, who is on loan at Venezia from Genoa. That loan was expected to be terminated.

Today, CalcioSpezia explain Bohinen changed his agents towards the end of December.

At that point, Rangers and Derby County emerged as possible destinations for him. Their approaches didn’t bear fruit and Dutch clubs also failed with moves. Spezia were emerging as his next destination, with the player set to return to his parent club Genoa first.

Rangers and Derby County surely more attractive football-wise

Now, Venezia’s stance on Bohinen’s exit is causing problems for Spezia. The Venice club want to sort out a replacement first and this has led to the player considering others. This is likely to hand another chance to Rangers and Derby County, who are in this strange ‘tug of war’.

Bohinen was born in Derby when his father Lars was playing for the Rams. That may be an attraction for the 26-year-old but helping Danny Röhl’s title charge at Rangers would also be tempting.

Spezia might not be a great destination for Bohinen, despite what the Italian media have been saying. They’re struggling at 17th in Serie B just two years after a stay in the top-flight. Spezia average less than 10k, and the most attractive thing appears to be the beaches in nearby villages.

Rangers and Derby County surely have more going for them on a football basis.
