Roberto Pereyra had a four-year spell at Watford between 2016 and 2020.

The Uruguayan arrived from Juventus, where he won multiple Serie A titles. He also played in the Champions League final against Barcelona in 2015.

The move to Watford in 2016 was a surprise for many, and the 34-year-old has now looked back on his time in London.

Pereyra spoke to Cronache di Spogliatoio and reflected on his long career.

The current AEK Athens player revealed said he faced multiple difficulties at Watford.

He said – relayed by Calciomercato: “I’d get up and open the window. Rain. Always. I’d say, ‘Where did I come from? When the [redacted] is the sun coming out?’

“I saw it once a year. It was tough, especially because I didn’t speak English.”

Pereyra revealed that Walter Mazzarri was key in bringing him to Watford. Despite difficulties, he has no regrets about the tenure.

“I remember Mazzarri busting my balls, joking: ‘Oh Tucu, when are you coming to Watford?’ I accepted. But I don’t regret it. That choice also led me to be who I am today.”

During his time with the Hornets, the midfielder scored 18 times in all competitions. He also assisted nine times, playing a total of 115 games.

Pereyra had two good seasons in the Premier League, scoring 11 times across the 2017/18 and 2018/19 campaigns.

He was one of their best players during that time too. Even if he had a difficult time off-the-pitch, that didn’t always impact his performances. This helped him become a key player for Udinese even until the 2023/24 season, where he contributed to eight Serie A goals.
