L’Equipe have a great big transfer special in their Tuesday edition and, of course, Newcastle United are part of it. Newcastle’s days of French revolution may be long behind them, but it’s clear the club still look to Ligue 1 for potential recruits.
Rafael Benitez staying with Newcastle and getting them promoted from the Championship at the first attempt only underlines further what a big attraction the club is, and that will apply for agents too.
Yann Karamoh is named as a player of interest to Newcastle United. That interest is said to have heightened, but Newcastle will face competition from AS Monaco.
Whilst competition from Monaco may sound like bad news, there’s some good news too. Karamoh plays for Caen, where he came through the youth system, and has refused to sign a contract extension.
Will a deal ending in June 2018, Caen are now under pressure to sell, rather than lose the 18 year old for training fees next summer.
Primarily playing on the right, the right footer can operate anywhere across the front.
In February, Sport Witness’ Tom Coast put together a selection of options for Celtic looking for Dembélé Mk. II, and the now Newcastle United target got a mention: ‘Clearly targeting someone young and fast were Sinclair to leave, an interesting target for Brendan Rodgers could be Caen’s Yann Karamoh.
The 18-year-old right-winger has certainly caught the eye this season with his blistering pace and strong right foot, and with four goals and three assists in 14 league starts, the potential is certainly there.
Furthermore, his ability to play on either wing will be an appeal to most managers.
Caen aren’t the richest club around Ligue 1, and with a good offer of somewhere in between €5-7m, a fee far smaller than what Celtic would get for Sinclair, the Scottish side shouldn’t have too much problem convincing their French counterparts to part ways with their exciting talent.’
Given the contract situation, Newcastle United could potentially get Yann Karamoh even cheaper now.
