The performance from Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans had in Belgium’s friendly against England is getting highly praised by his home country’s media.
As DH talks about the Red Devils’ performance, columnist Jonathan Legear made some individual comments about the national team players.
Tielemans was one of them, and there are many compliments towards the Aston Villa player.
The pundit made it clear that the midfielder continues to have a lot to give to the Belgium’s squad, regardless of some poor performances he recently had.
“Tielemans had a great first half with, in addition to his goals, some fine vertical passes. In the second half, he was more subdued. We knew about his shooting and passing ability,” says Legear.
“It’s in him. He’s had more complicated rallies where he’s been beaten up by people who have forgotten his qualities. The good things he’s done have been erased in the space of a few games. At 100% of his potential, as he is at the moment, he is one of the 14 most important players in the squad.”
Tielemans now has 68 caps for Belgium, having played for them since 2016, and scored their two goals in the 2-2 draw with England after drawing 0-0 with Ireland last weekend.
The Red Devils now have friendlies against Montenegro and Luxemburg, until they face Slovakia, Romania and Ukraine in the Euro’s group stage.
Playing for Aston Villa this season, Tielemans has two goals and five assists in 37 appearances.
Even though he now seems far from his peak, his performance for the national team may be a sign that he can still deliver his best, and will certainly please Unai Emery.
