Manchester United signed Patrick Dorgu from Lecce in the January transfer window, after negotiating his arrival for weeks.

The Red Devils beat competition from Napoli in the chase and there was talk that the Italian giants were looking to sign him and loan him back to Lecce until the end of the season.

Manchester United paid around €30m to sign the Dane, who has already played three games for the club.

Journalist Mimmo Malfitano has now provided details about the 20-year-old’s transfer to England, claiming that Napoli missed out because of commissions in the deal.

He told Radio Marte, as relayed by CalcioNapoli1926: “It’s a question of percentages for the agents: commissions, in general, create problems and De Laurentiis doesn’t like them, he doesn’t want to.”

Malfitano also stated that Manchester United offered a higher salary to Dorgu.

“For Dorgu, Manchester made higher offers, the player himself preferred the Premier League for contractual and salary reasons.”

Dorgu has impressed in his first few games, showing an ability to overlap on the flanks and has also showcased his ability to cover ground.

The media around Napoli can be partisan at times, and that could be what these claims are motivated by. Rather than admitting Dorgu simply preferred Manchester United and the Premier League over Napoli and Serie A, it’s more palatable to put his transfer decision down to financial factors.
