Last weekend, when Corinthians were still looking for a new manager, the Brazilian media reported that Bruno Lage, recently dismissed by Wolverhampton Wanderers, was a target for the club.
That rumour didn’t last long, though, with the Timão announcing at the weekend the arrival of Fernando Lazaro for the job.
It turns out there’s a specific reason why Corinthians turned down the chances of signing the former Wolves boss, and that was money.
According to journalist Jorge Nicola, Bruno Lage demanded €5m free of taxes in wages to take charge of the club, which would be around £98k a week, and made him a ‘name out of the question’ for the position.
Reports from Brazil had claimed that Lage was offered to Corinthians by agent Kia Joorabchian.
That indeed sounded like a weird step for a manager who was just working in the Premier League at a club like Wolverhampton Wanderers, so it makes sense that he would demand a lot of money to take charge of a Brazilian club.
The Portuguese boss therefore remains unemployed since being sacked by Wolves in early October, having left the club with 19 wins in 51 games.
