Romelu Lukaku was not properly rewarded by Inter Milan, leading to the tumultuous summer and subsequent falling out between the player and the club over his failed move from Chelsea.
That’s according to journalist Sandro Sabatini, who has defended the striker today after a summer of transfer strife and several months of criticism of his actions.
Lukaku returned to Chelsea in the summer following a loan spell at Inter Milan, his second successive loan spell at the Italian side.
It had seemed likely that he would return to Inter on a permanent basis at some point, with all the parties keen to make that deal happen.
That didn’t happen, though, as Lukaku ended up infuriating those in charge at Inter Milan by electing to sit down and talk to Juventus over a possible move there instead.
Inter thus took the decision to walk away, as did Juventus, leaving the player scrambling and eventually signing on loan at Roma.
In the months since there has been a consistent barrage of criticism for the Chelsea striker, whose actions were seen as deplorable and deserving of the response by some.
Sabatini has a different opinion, though, and believes those criticising should look at it from the Belgian’s point of view.
“In April Marotta said that he would return to Chelsea, and they would only try to get him back on loan. The permanent deal is in July,” he said.
“Also put yourself in the player’s shoes, who hears that his team wants to take you back but only on loan. It’s not the best. Inter hasn’t been very rewarding.”
