Benfica are so far blocking Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee Goncalo Guedes from departing for Villarreal and have ‘put the brakes on’ any potential deal happening this month.
That’s according to Record, who say the Portuguese side are not willing to let him depart at this moment in time despite efforts from Villarreal.
They explain that the Spanish side are keen on the winger and a transfer deal was beginning to take shape for them to get their man.
Guedes is currently in the second year of a loan deal with Benfica from Wolves, but the move has been something of a disaster and various reports in Portugal made it clear that all parties would agree to separate.
Indeed, it was claimed that Guedes was forcing his way out of the club, with Wolves in negotiations with Villarreal over a new loan deal to take him to Spain instead.
However, Record now report that Benfica’s management ‘decided to put the brakes on’ a departure, at least for now.
That doesn’t mean they are blocking an exit entirely, rather they would prefer to see the Wolves man leave at the end of the month than at this point in time.
It appears they, and specifically President Rui Costa, want to see how the transfer market develops in the coming weeks before making a decision on the loanee.
Perhaps they are waiting to see if anyone becomes available for themselves so that they can replace the winger, forcing Villarreal to wait in the process, despite Guedes and Wolves seemingly being keen on the move.
