Following reports in the English media saying Newcastle United are making an attempt to sign Gonçalo Ramos from Benfica, there’s a very clear message in the Portuguese press today.
That is: the Magpies will have to make a bigger effort, or there will be no deal.
Two newspapers talk about the recent rumours. One of them is A Bola, and the first thing they do is mention that in the original report, the €80m request from the Eagles is said to be a problem.
A Bola then write that Benfica already knew that a club were willing to offer €60m for Ramos, and had made it known they won’t let him move for that amount. It’s claimed that the Lisbon side know that clubs with big financial power will come in for him eventually, and won’t hurry to sell.
The report adds that both Paris Saint Germain and Manchester United are interested in Ramos, but says there have been no bids placed yet, and that may be a good sign for the Magpies to work calmly.
Meanwhile, newspaper Jornal de Notícias writes that following claims of a €60m Newcastle bid, that amount is ‘insufficient’. It’s also said that €80m is needed to convince Benfica, so the Magpies must be prepared to put more on the table.
