Manchester City’s position on Claudio Echeverri is hardening further. Reports from Argentina outline a direct clash between the player’s wishes and Pep Guardiola’s plans.

According to Soy del Millo, Echeverri has been pushing intensely for a return to River Plate, but Guardiola has made his stance clear: he wants the midfielder to join Girona if the loan at Bayer Leverkusen ends early.

Journalist Renzo Pantich revealed that Pep “wants Echeverri to go to Girona”, even as the player continues to push for River. Then Sebastián Srur stated that Echeverri “was asking loudly to return to River” and made his desire clear inside the dressing room.

River Plate are trying to take advantage of that momentum and continue to explore ways to bring him back, even with little progress so far.

Manchester City, meanwhile, remain firm. Their plan prioritises Girona as the next step, with the long-term aim of keeping Echeverri in Europe and potentially reintegrating him in the future.

For now, the gap between the player’s desire and City’s strategy remains wide. The decision will hinge on whether Guardiola’s preference or Echeverri’s pressure ultimately shapes the January window.

The Manchester City manager hasn’t appeared impressed with the youngster’s agents on more than one occasion. That will not help when convincing him to be more flexible.
