Fenerbahçe are targeting a move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez this summer, via presidential candidate Aziz Yildirim.

Fanatik report that Yildirim has his eyes on the Aston Villa goalkeeper once again after speaking to him during his 2024 campaign.

President wants Aston Villa star again

According to the outlet, Yildirim has ‘once again set his sights’ on the goalkeeper. He is targeting the Argentina star if he cannot get a deal for Jan Oblak over the line.

All eyes at Fenerbahçe are currently on the extraordinary general assembly election. Yildirim is running for president again and has turned his attention to the Aston Villa number one.

He held talks with Martinez before the 2024 election, which he lost to Ali Koç. The transfer then fell apart when he failed to win the election.

Now his plan is to sign a star goalkeeper this summer. The main target is Jan Oblak, but Emiliano Martinez is also on the list. According to Takvim, work has begun for both goalkeepers.

Although the Argentine has a three year contract with Aston Villa, there is a possibility that he leaves Villa Park this summer. Interestingly, another presidential candidate Hakan Safi, wants to sign AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

Transfer targets

It seems that the various presidential candidates have the biggest names in Europe as part of their current campaigns. Whether that leads to actual moves, remains to be seen.

As Fanatik explain, Yildirim already tried to get Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa two years ago. That move ultimately fell by the wayside when his presidential campaign was also unsuccessful.

Even if he is successful, getting Martinez out of Villa Park will not be an easy task. He’s locked to a long-term deal, a key player under Unai Emery and they’re likely heading back to the Champions League next season. There is no reason for the Villans to let him leave, unless Fenerbahçe come calling with a big transfer fee, of course.
