Genoa president Alberto Zangrillo has told Gazzetta dello Sport that it was “necessary” for his side to sell Radu Drăgușin to Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month.
The centre-back’s development at the Serie A side had caught the attention of Spurs, Bayern Munich and other clubs. The Bundesliga side had reportedly offered a better deal to the 21-year-old, but he snubbed them to join Spurs earlier in the window.
Drăgușin’s exit has impacted the Italian club sporting wise, but that didn’t stop them from sanctioning his sale to Tottenham.
When the newspaper directly asked Zangrillo if it was impossible to hold on to the star, he made an interesting point about the north London club.
“Dragusin’s sale was a necessary, thoughtful choice, shared by all those who have responsibility for the central objective: the growth of the club on the national scene,” he said,
“We would have done the club and him a disservice by not accepting Tottenham’s proposal.”
Various claims have stated Ange Postecoglou’s side have paid €25m, plus €6m as potential bonuses, to secure the Romania international’s services.
Three days ago, journalist Calin Mates told Digispor that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy intervened to help Spurs beat Bayern to sign the player.
According to Mates, Drăgușin currently earns around €3m per year at Tottenham.
The former Juventus man made his Spurs debut in their 2-2 draw against Manchester United.
