Over the past few days, ever since he started scoring for Inter again, the future of Romelu Lukaku at Chelsea has been a topic of discussion in Italy.

Not only that, but Beppe Marotta fuelled the fire on Monday when he said the Belgian would return to Stamford Bridge on June 30th, at which point both clubs would sit down to discuss the player’s future.

There has been a wide belief the striker would remain away from Chelsea for an extra year, with an agreement of a loan renewal being struck off the record, but his poor season in Italy to date has put that in doubt.

Gazzetta dello Sport have a big article on the matter on Tuesday, looking at how the idea of a Lukaku return is being seen at in England, and it doesn’t go in the player’s favour.

That’s because Todd Boehly’s new project with the Blues is entered around younger players, and while Thomas Tuchel, with whom the forward didn’t get along, is no longer there, Graham Potter’s philosophy also happens to be youth centric.

This is why Chelsea ‘would therefore not mind a second one-year loan before probing the ground for a permanent transfer’.

This means the player ‘is not in the Blues’ plans and his return would be a last resort’, especially since Potter doesn’t not seem ‘enthusiastic about his return, and the same goes for the ownership’.

Despite them lacking a centre-forward, they don’t want Lukaku, or, at least, would rather he didn’t return.

It’s a scenario that has a ‘minor probability of happening, but certainly not impossible’, and that’s something that needs to be monitored between now and the rest of the season.
