As Radu Dragușin’s agents head to London to try and finalise his transfer to Tottenham, there are some in Italy who are bemoaning the deal.
The reason for that is yet another talented player from Serie A is heading to England, where money grows on trees, at least when it comes to the Premier League.
Valentina Ballarini is the one who voiced her displeasure at the situation on SportItalia, relayed by Tutto Juve, using the defender’s impending move to Tottenham as the perfect example of a ‘sad’ situation in Italian football.
She said: “Take Dragușin. Yes, Dragușin, who is just the latest in a long list. How can Italian football also lose Dragușin? How is it possible to have only discovered him for six months at a high level in Serie A with Genoa? Is it possible that nobody noticed him before? Juventus had the defender of the present and future and sold him to Genoa for only €5.5m.
“With all due respect to Genoa, but where were the other big teams, all of whom were in need of a defender? It’s easy to wake up now, like Napoli, when Bayern, as well as Tottenham, have swooped down on the player. Where is the planning?”
Ballarini didn’t stop there, claiming that such a situation on the transfer market is ‘grotesque’ for Italian football, with the feeling there is no money for clubs in Serie A to spend, and when they do have it, they almost squander it.
And once Premier League clubs sniff an opportunity, they jump on it, like Tottenham have done for the Romanian centre-back, who appears set to move to London in the coming days.
