Tottenham fans don’t need to panic for now. Mauricio Pochettino shouldn’t be Atletico Madrid’s main option in case Diego Simeone leaves the Spanish club.

Recent reports from England have suggested that the Colchoneros would like to have the Spurs manager as a long-term replacement for Cholo, who could be leaving for Inter Milan or a sabbatical.

But the word in Argentina is that there could be someone else for the job. This would be the River Plate manager Marcelo Gallardo.

According to what’s been said by Agenda Fox Sports, Gallardo could be leaving River Plate soon and the chance to take charge of Atletico Madrid is only one more incentive for him.

The Spanish side have reportedly already made approaches for the manager, although there are no official offers as Simeone’s departure would have to happen first, and Atletico obviously want to avoid that.

Gallardo isn’t exactly living a golden moment at River Plate. After winning many trophies and becoming an idol at the club, he’s been struggling to find a good team and that should be one of the reasons for his exit.

There’s no mention of Tottenham’s Pochettino, and that’s usually the case in Spain too. Whilst there’s a great deal of respect for Pochettino and what he’s done at White Hart Lane, the Spanish media haven’t yet really pushed the idea of an Atletico move.

A curious fact about this story is that all three managers have played together for the Argentine national team. Maybe Atletico can go through the whole lot, just not Pochettino yet.
