Everyone loves a bit of drama in football, and West Ham United supporters especially enjoyed heaps of it on Monday evening as Ruben Amorim got on a private jet for talks in England.
Liverpool had been the club most linked with Amorim, but it’s worth noting the Portuguese media had said on multiple occasions that it wasn’t nailed on he’d leave Sporting for Anfield.
There’s obviously attractions at Liverpool, but there’s been a big campaign to keep him at Sporting and the towel hadn’t been thrown in.
Despite Amorim’s trip to West Ham, that stance remains the same.
Record report the manager could reject both Liverpool and West Ham, and a move to the Premier League generally.
They say that as it stands he won’t be at either English club next season, and ‘from a source close to the coach, this is the only certainty that is on the table’.
Record add that West Ham were ‘attempting a seduction manoeuvre’, and ‘that did not come to fruition’.
So as far as this particular Portuguese newspaper has it, the West Ham approach hasn’t yet worked, the Liverpool option isn’t concrete, and – again, as it stands – he won’t be at either club next season.
Whether this is just Portuguese bravado remains to be seen.
It’s worth noting Ruben Amorim has a €20m release clause. There’s the potential for that to come down, and conflicting reports on the likelihood of a discount.
