Despite the huge coverage the Super League is getting all over Europe, there’s one specific country with other big football news to report today.

The Portuguese media turns the spotlight to José Mourinho’s departure from Tottenham Hotspur, as the manager was sacked after 17 months in charge of the club.

Most of the local press is surprised to see Spurs letting the manager go at this stage of the season, especially with only one week until the League Cup final against Manchester City.

And it turns out that when looking for a reason why the dismissal is happening now, most of them are naming Tottenham’s entrance in the Super League as the main motivation for it.

Outlet Record features a story pointing out that there’s been a conversation between Daniel Levy and José Mourinho on Sunday where the manager ‘would’ve said’ he’s against the Super League. That’s what rushed this dismissal, and he didn’t expect it to happen now. Even though Record doesn’t make it clear whether it’s their information or not, that’s the only version they bring.

The comments on TV are similar, even though it’s purely based on opinion. TVI journalist Luis Vilar claims he ‘believes it was an extraordinary decision’, nothing to do with results, especially because of the upcoming final, so it’s ‘more obvious to say’ it’s related to the ‘Super League earthquake’.

Pundit Bruno Andrade goes with him, claiming in case it’s true that Mourinho had a disagreement with the club, that ‘he’d rather stay at his side’, as the Super League threatens the ‘credibility’ of European football.
