Manchester United’s interest in signing José Fonte in the last days of the transfer window is something that came from the British press, with ESPN reporting it.
The information was published on Sunday, without many details, only saying that the talks for the transfer of the Southampton defender were already taking place.
However, Record published an article, which initially slipped our attention, claiming that Manchester United officials visited Watford on Sunday, as Southampton were there for their Premier League debut.
They say the emissaries were at St. Mary’s stadium to make “steps forward” and get somewhere with the potential transfer.
Record started the paragraph mentioning the conversations and credited the British press, but didn’t make any clear if this meeting was also something published in England or if it was their own information.
From everything we’ve read in the past couple of days, no outlet in England said United were negotiating for Fonte in Watford, so we must just assume it was Record who learned it.
According to ESPN, Manchester United are expected to pay around £8m for Fonte if the deal goes through.
