Manchester United officials were on a scouting mission at the Portuguese league tie between Vitória de Guimarães and Belenenses last Saturday, according to A Bola.
It’s quite rare that English giants watch the smaller Portuguese clubs. Manchester Untied and other watch Sporting, Benfica and Porto often, but after that there’s less scouting of clubs.
Premier League sides Watford and West Ham were said to be present at the game as well.
Manchester United youngster Joel Pereira is on loan at Belenenses, but he’s there as a back-up so it’s be a surprise if someone went to watch him on the bench.
Although no players from Vitória or Belenenses have been linked to English clubs recently, the newspaper says José Mourinho’s side were looking for a ‘gem in Bebé’s image’.
Manchester United signed Bebé from Vitória de Guimarães in 2010, and the rest is the stuff of legend.
We unfortunately can’t confirm how sarcastic A Bola were in their statement above. We hope it was ‘a lot’.
