Portsmouth’s attempt to keep Gustavo Caballero is no longer as straightforward as it once looked.

The Paraguayan winger arrived from Santos earlier this year on a loan deal that included a defined pathway to a permanent transfer.

As previously reported in Brazil, the Championship club had an exclusive purchase option worth around £4.25m (€5m). This was for 80% of the player’s rights.

That structure suited Portsmouth well. Caballero was adapting positively to English football. His minutes were increasing and there was a growing feeling that the clause could eventually be triggered.

However, the situation has now changed.

Missed deadline brings a twist

According to reports in Paraguay, Portsmouth allowed the deadline on their exclusive purchase option to expire. This opened the door for fresh competition around the player.

That does not mean the club has walked away. Quite the opposite.

The report explains Portsmouth are now trying to renegotiate with Santos in order to retain Caballero beyond this season. However, the problem is that the environment around the winger has become much more aggressive than when the original agreement was signed.

Growing reputation changing market dynamic

Gustavo Caballero has steadily gained visibility in recent months.

The 24-year-old has made 14 Championship appearances so far, scoring once against Millwall while increasingly being used from the left wing. Internally, Portsmouth’s coaching staff are said to be impressed by his pace and adaptation to the physical demands of the league.

Caballero himself recently spoke positively about English football, describing it as intense and highly competitive. He also explained that Portsmouth’s coaching staff have specifically encouraged him to maximise his speed and direct running.

At international level, things are also accelerating.

Paraguay manager Gustavo Alfaro recently praised the winger publicly, explaining that he had wanted to call him up even before his move to Santos.

Alfaro added that Caballero is now showing his qualities consistently in England. He described him as one of the Paraguayan players currently taking an important “European step”.

That recognition matters because the winger is increasingly viewed as a realistic option for Paraguay’s World Cup squad.

Portsmouth now face wider competition

The timing of the expired clause could become problematic for Portsmouth.

This fresh report claim there is concern inside the English club that a strong period with Paraguay – particularly around the World Cup – could send Caballero’s valuation upwards. As a result, this could attract stronger competition.

The Paraguayan report specifically mentions interest emerging from other Championship clubs as well as sides in Scotland.

Meanwhile, Santos are believed to be fully open to a future sale. The Brazilian side do not currently see Caballero as part of their long-term squad planning and have increasingly treated him as a market opportunity.

That leaves Portsmouth in a more delicate position than before.

Previously, the club had a protected route towards a fixed-price deal. Now they may have to negotiate in an open market, while Caballero’s profile continues to rise through both club football and international exposure.
