Two days ago, claims from Croatia reported Celtic’s advances to sign Hajduk Split’s Niko Sigur. Journalist Ižak Ante Sučić stated the player was ‘one step away’ from making a switch to Celtic Park in the winter market.

Celtic have appointed Martin O’Neill as their manager until the end of this season, after parting ways with Wilfried Nacy. It was explained their pursuit of Sigur is back on track after Nancy’s exit.

On Thursday, 24 Sata reported it’s unclear whether the 22-year-old will join Celtic in this window. O’Neill hasn’t made a decision over signing Sigur, who operates as a midfielder and a right-back.

Sportske Novosti now looks at an earlier claim of Celtic being much ahead in their pursuit of the Canada international.

Despite there being talk of the Scottish club being his next destination, they claim a move to Celtic is far off.

The versatile player is likely to be represent his national team at the next World Cup. If he were to continue at Hajduk until the end of this season, Sportske Novosti insist Sigur can improve his valuation during the World Cup.

Another Croatian outlet, Dalmatinski Portal, also looks at the Canadian’s immediate future at Hajduk Split.

They make no mention of Celtic or any other club. According to them, there’s serious interest in Sigur but a ‘departure is unlikely’ in January.

To sum it up, Sučić said the player was a step away from joining Celtic. Other outlets have now played down his report.
