On May 16th, Sky Deutschland journalist Florian Plettenberg said SC Freiburg goalkeeper Mark Flekken has reached a verbal agreement to join Brentford in the summer.
The Bundesliga side’s chief, Jochen Saier, has already admitted the 29-year-old will take the next step in his career.
After relaying Saier’s quotes, Kicker now state Brentford will be the stopper’s next destination. They even add ‘the transfer is imminent’.
Freiburg have one more game left this season, against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday. The deal to take Netherlands international to the Bees could be announced before the weekend tie or ‘soon after’ that.
In other words, the announcement of Flekken’s move to Brentford is ‘expected in the near future’, meaning in the next few days.
The German club extended the Dutchman’s contract last September and included a €13m release clause. Having paid €2m to buy him from MSV Duisburg in 2018, they are now set to earn a ‘hefty sum’ from his sale to Thomas Frank’s side.
Brentford currently have David Raya as their first-choice goalkeeper. His deal last until 2024 and after refusing to sign an extension with the Premier League club, he’s set to leave in the summer.
With Flekken’s move to Brentford expected to be announced soon, he can become Raya’s successor next season.
