Back at the weekend, reports from Portugal said Chelsea would have a scout watching Viktor Gyokeres in Sporting’s match against FC Porto. With him being decisive with a goal and an assist, it’s now impossible to let this chase be forgotten.
Portuguese newspapers Correio da Manhã, Record and O Jogo all have stories on the centre-forward’s form today, and all of them give the Blues’ interest a mention.
What Chelsea need to understand very well is that Gyokeres is protected by Sporting with a €100m release clause, and as written by Record, the Portuguese club won’t let him go in January for less than that.
So a smart move from the Blues may be to wait a little longer and try to get a discount in the summer window.
That possibility is brought by O Jogo, who first claims the Stamford Bridge side are watching him ‘very closely’, and then says they’re evaluating the possibility of a bid at the end of the season.
Still, as Correio Da Manhã has an article claiming Sporting manager Ruben Amorim is losing his sleep because of the chase for Gyokeres, they point out that the release clause ‘does not scare’ Chelsea, so that may open the possibility of a January move.
We’ll have to wait and see whether Mauricio Pochettino’s side will be ready to give it a try, but it’s a lot of money, albeit for a very prolific striker, which the Blues are currently lacking.
