If there was one surprising move in the January transfer window, it was Matt Doherty leaving Tottenham to join Atletico Madrid.

The Irishman left Tottenham on a free transfer on deadline day of the January window and quickly switched to Spain, joining Diego Simeone’s side until the end of the season as cover at right-back.

He’s yet to benefit from the move, though, with Mundo Deportivo covering him today and how he’s barely featured.

The newspaper explain that Doherty has ‘hardly had any opportunities’ since his move from Tottenham, sitting out of the side as they flourish and competition is fierce.

At the moment nobody wants to be left out of the side and Doherty’s options are slim, particularly as he wasn’t a signing ‘specifically requested by Diego Simeone’.

Indeed, the defender’s move from Tottenham was a ‘decision by the club’ because they believed he was a market opportunity to solve a deficit in the squad that had been dragging them down for some time.

They also believe it would allow them to given Nahuel Molina a rest but even with that, it has been Marcos Llorente who has been chosen to fill the role.

There ‘not much sign’ of that changing between now and the end of the season either, with the situation described as a ‘complicated scenario’. In fact, this international break is seen as an ‘Irish oasis’ for him.

So far his decision to switch Tottenham for Atletico has not worked out as he might have imagined, despite his desire to convince the club and walk in Kieran Trippier’s footsteps.
