Former Brentford defender Pontuss Jansson has found himself being investigated internally by new club Malmö FF after being caught up in a police investigation into hooliganism in Sweden.
That’s according to Sport Bladet, who report that the 33-year-old will not play in Malmö FF’s match against BP on Saturday as he is being investigated by the club.
They explain that Malmö FF’s are investigating their defender, who joined them from Brentford in July 2023, after he was named in a preliminary investigation linked to a violent riot.
A meeting was held with the player’s group at the club on Thursday where Jansson explained about his name being mentioned in an extensive police investigation.
This has triggered an investigation to be held by Malmö FF’s, who are taking the matter seriously despite insisting the former Brentford defender has not done anything illegal nor is he suspected of any crime.
Jansson has further detailed the matter in an official statement from the club, explaining it goes back to his time at Brentford.
“Everyone knows that I have a great commitment to Malmö FF and the support for the association and the team,” he said.
“When the results failed in 2022, I played in England and was then invited to a chat group where Malmö FF was discussed.
“My intentions were purely good, I wanted to see if there was any way I could contribute to strengthening support for the team and help turn the team’s performance around.”
Sport Bladet further explain these conversations must have been discovered when the police arrested several hooligans last year after a planned clash at Fridhemsplan in central Stockholm.
Several men were arrested and when their phones were examined as part of the investigation, they found frequent conversations with Jansson, who was at Brentford at the time.
“In retrospect, I fully understand that I was in a context that I should not have been a part of,” the defender added.
“I should have left the group, which I have now done, already when I returned to Malmö FF last summer. This is also why, when I found out what suspicions there were against others in the group, I immediately turned to the association.”
