Pedro Goncalves arrived at Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2017, and having failed to truly settle or have an impact, he left the English club in 2020 for a return to Portugal with Famalicão.
Since then he’s moved to Sporting and become one of Ruben Amorim’s best players. He’s the midfielder the manager doesn’t want to lose and any transfer would cost a great deal of money.
Tuesday’s edition of Record states that Goncalves going on to be so valuable is making Wolves think twice about letting Chiquinho leave on a permanent transfer.
The Portuguese newspaper reports he’s currently ‘waiting for the green light’ to leave Wolves and sign for Sporting permanently.
Talks are ongoing between the two clubs, but Record say that according to their own information, there’s a pause on things whilst Gary O’Neil further assesses the player.
Wolves ‘don’t want to repeat the mistake’ of Goncalves. Whilst O’Neil is said to have no doubt about Chiquinho’s ability, he has other options, with Pedro Neto and Podence named, for that role.
At least one of those is likely to leave, yet Chiquinho himself is more tempted by Sporting and Champions League football.
On Pedro Goncalves, it’s worth noting the player himself has admitted he found it hard to settle in England as a youngster, so it perhaps wasn’t such a Wolves clanger as Record are insinuating.
A solution with Chiquinho, although not mentioned by the report, would surely be Wolves keeping a percentage of a future transfer.
