Leeds United appear to have missed out on the signing of Kofi Amoako from Dynamo Dresden. He’s joining Hamburger SV this summer, instead of Daniel Farke’s side.
BILD Hannover report that the 21-year-old defensive midfielder is set to remain in Germany, rather than moving to Elland Road.
Leeds United rejection
The newspaper explains that, while a deal isn’t done yet, Kofi Amoako is likely to be a Hamburg player next season.
The German club intend to activate his release clause sooner rather than later, with planning for next season’s squad already well underway.
Hamburg have been handed a head start after securing their Bundesliga status early and want to take advantage of that by snapping up Amoako quickly. He will cost just under €2m. if Dresden are relegate to the third division, that drops to €500,000.
According to the newspaper, the midfielder is said to have ‘explicitly expressed’ his desire to join Merlin Polzin’s side. He has turned down interest from Mainz and Leeds United to stay in Germany this summer instead.
Bundesliga chance
Hamburg are equally keen on him. They believe he is similar to what they have in the squad and like that he took his own career in his hands by departing Wolfsburg rather than waiting for a chance there.
That saw him move on loan VfL Osnabrück in the third division before then joining Dresden for around €200,000 in 2025. Now his performances for them have earned him Bundesliga attention and he’s set for a move to Hamburg.
The move will come as a blow to Leeds. They would have been confident about getting the 21-year-old this summer. Indeed, a recent report indicated it was a deal that suited everyone perfectly.
Instead, it seems that Amoako has decided to stay in Germany. He wants to take his shot at the Bundesliga this time around.
