Deportivo La Coruna fans were devastated to lose Lucas Perez. The Galicia born player quickly became a fan favourite and there was a genuine emotional bond between Perez and the fans.
Perez himself was coming off a difficult period in his career, keen to return to Spain after spells in the Ukraine and Greece, and everything fell into place.
So who better to replace Perez than another player with Galicia family roots, also coming off a difficult time in another country, and looking to return home to shine.
Joselu should be that man, but there’s one problem. The 26 year old came through the academy at Celta Vigo, who are Depor’s big rivals.
Spanish newspaper AS say Joselu is aware his Celta past isn’t the best foundation to become a fan favourite, and they quote him as saying: “I just think about playing and returning all the confidence the club has placed in me. I’ve come to give everything for Depor.
“It’s been a few years since I left Galicia. I left at 18 years old and have come a long way. I’m very different, I have more experience, I played in the best leagues in the world… I hope to adapt quickly.”
If he does adapt quickly, he’ll be just fine. If he doesn’t, then the player’s Celta past won’t be so easy to forget for some.
Joselu is on loan, so how he gets on at Depor is very much of interest to Stoke City.
