It only took Marcos Leonardo a few minutes on the pitch for him to score his first goal for Benfica, following his €18m move from Santos this month.
The striker had been linked to the likes of Arsenal, Real Madrid and AS Roma, and that’s what Portuguese newspaper Record has a story about today.
The outlet claims Marcos Leonardo is ‘thrilled’ with the transfer, as he’s ‘convinced’ he’s made the right choice by joining Benfica.
It’s recalled that Arsenal and other clubs made approaches for him, but it’s really the Eagles who ‘convinced’ him after following him since 2021.
Record gathers many compliments that the 20-year-old has been getting, from people who worked with him at Santos and who welcomed him at Benfica, insisting he should have a bright future ahead.
Portuguese clubs often do a good job finding talents in South America, and then sell them for much more after some experience in Europe. We may be seeing another one of those cases right now, and if Arsenal try to sign Marcos Leonardo again in the future, they should pay a lot more than €18m.
