Someone at Ajax, perhaps someone pretty high up who has a record of playing for Barcelona, is telling the Catalan media Donny van de Beek is on the verge of signing for Manchester United.

Sunday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo said ‘everything indicates’ the midfielder will sign for the Red Devils, and that an announcement could come within hours.

In Sport’s Sunday edition, the report wasn’t quite so confident, instead stating Ajax have put their player ‘on the market’, and that Manchester United are ‘best placed’ to sign him.

Well, since then Sport have been given new information, and now claim Van de Beek has told his teammates he’s set to sign for the Premier League club. They believe he’ll travel to Manchester next week to complete the transfer.

The slant given is that Manchester United have beaten Barcelona to the signing, but earlier reports insisted that whilst the Dutchman was an option for the Blaugrana, he wasn’t a priority.

It’s increasingly clear that somebody wants this story out there and is using the Catalan press to carry it. That could be because it’s completely true, and in which case Van de Beek should show up at Carrington over the next few days, or that Ajax are once again trying to hype interest in a player to flush out offers from elsewhere.

They’ve done it multiple times before, and earlier this year a story was fed to De Telegraaf that Real Madrid had an agreed deal for Van de Beek, something Marca denied quickly.
