Despite strong rumours saying he was close to moving to Portugal to join Sporting, Everton left-back Bryan Oviedo has said he’s staying at the Merseyside club.

The 26-year-old, who’s out on international duty with Costa Rica, talked to local reporters ahead of the match against Haiti.

“If I travelled here, it means I’m staying at Everton. There were more rumours about leaving, but I knew it was a bit hard (via CR Hoy).

“I’ve just signed for three years with Everton and also we have only two left-backs at the club. They asked for me but I knew it was difficult.”

Oviedo has a contract with Everton until 2018. The player, who signed from Copenhagen for €4.5m in 2012, hasn’t been much used by the the club, for various reasons including terrible luck with injuries, and only made 14 Premier League appearances last season.
