FC Twente defender Robin Pröpper has insisted he was open to staying at Rangers and didn’t push to leave Ibrox.
Twente Fans have comments from the player this weekend, including on his time at Rangers. He recently appeared on the FC Twente podcast ‘Since 1965’.
The defender returned to the Dutch club in the summer after just a year with Rangers. He joined the Scottish giants in August 2024.
He was initially a regular for Rangers under Philippe Clement but saw his role diminished after his departure. A consistent starting role was then not on offer under Russel Martin.
That led to his return to Twente in the summer. He first played for them from July 2021 to August 2024, playing 95 league games for the club before departing for Rangers.
He was a key player for the Dutch side during that period but was unable to establish himself in the same way at Rangers. But that doesn’t mean he was actively looking to leave Rangers this summer. In fact, he insists that at first, he looked into whether he could stay longer.
Ultimately, though, the option of going back to Twente, where he was evidently wanted more, made up his mind.
“It was either stay or go to FC Twente,” he said.
“Then I first looked into whether I could stay there, because it wasn’t that I didn’t want to stay, absolutely not. My role was changing; I was told that. Then I realised that Twente really wanted me back, so why wouldn’t I? I’d already had such a good time.
“I also know that it’s difficult to get back to the period you had before or even make it better, but I knew I would do my utmost to make it a success again. I have a good feeling about the club, and I know that feeling is mutual.”
