Arsenal are among the clubs to have shown interest in signing Gabri Veiga last summer. That’s been brought up by AS, in a chat they had with the player.
The 21-year-old excelled at Celta Vigo last season, scoring 11 goals and registering four assists from 39 games. His displays caught the attention of several clubs, including Arsenal.
Last year, Faro de Vigo insisted that it was the midfielder’s dream to join Mikel Arteta’s side. AS also stated the Gunners had made an offer to the La Liga side.
AS’ Manu Sainz claimed that Veiga would like to work under Arteta at Arsenal. They were in a battle with other European clubs but weren’t able to get the deal over the line.
The Spain U21 international surprised everyone by making a switch to Al-Ahli towards the end of that window.
The newspaper has asked him if the reports of interest from Arsenal, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester City were true. When responding to that, the player insisted he made the right decision when moving to Saudi Arabia.
“Everything that comes out is not true, unfortunately. The truth is that I leave all that in the hands of my representatives. I have full confidence in them,” he said.
“I was focused on finishing a dream season, which in the end got complicated, without being aware of any kind of rumour. Perhaps at some point there was a strong interest, but later on in the lists another type of profile gains more strength.”
“But I can tell you that in August I was faced with a situation and I took the decision I thought was the right one. I’m 100% sure that it was the right one.”
Veiga has further explained that he’s happy at Al-Ahli and isn’t planning to leave them in the summer.
