David de Gea has been left stuck in limbo after leaving Manchester United in the summer, with time running out to find a new club.

That’s according to AS, who say the Saudi Arabian route is only open for him until this evening at which point his options will be limited.

De Gea left Manchester United on a free transfer in the summer, bringing an end to a 12-year stay at Old Trafford as Erik ten Hag looked elsewhere and eventually brought in Andre Onana as his new number one.

The Spaniard has been linked with several big clubs in Europe since leaving but options such as Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have never materialised as they looked elsewhere.

Their transfer windows, as with most around the world, have now closed and ‘time is running out’ for the former Manchester United man to now find himself a new club.

At the moment his possibility ‘mainly’ lie in Saudi Arabia, but their window closes this evening at 11:59pm. Several big-name keepers have already moved to the country this summer and AS say it’s a position clubs there ‘always like to reinforce’.

The problem is that more have now filled up their quota of nine foreign players and so a move to most of the big clubs, and thus the big spenders, seems unlikely.

The only open door in Europe is Turkey, where several of his former Manchester United teammates have moved this summer, but even there the big sides have closed their squads because of European deadlines and if De Gea was to join one of the teams in a European competition, he wouldn’t be able to play.

After that the options would be Qatar, the United Arab Emirates or Mexico as their windows are open until next week otherwise, he faces a wait until January without playing, a position most footballers would not want to find themselves in.
