Every footballer has their big moment in the sun, the game, goal, assist that for them defines their career and for GVV’s Barry Maguire, it was beating Celtic 4-0 in 2010.

That’s according to his teammate Leroy George, who says the striker is still bragging about that Celtic win to this day.

For those that don’t know, Maguire is a Dutch striker currently plying his trade for GVV in the Tweede Division in the Netherlands.

He’s enjoyed a varied career in his homeland to this point, playing for the likes of Utrecht, VVV-Venlo and FC Den Bosch as well as enjoying spells in Ireland and Norway.

Maguire hasn’t managed to win anything with those clubs but did find himself playing in Europe back in the 2010/11 season when he was with Utrecht.

That year they were competing in the Europa League and faced Neil Lennon’s Celtic side in the qualifying rounds.

They had found themselves as the underdogs in that tie and expected to go out after a 2-0 loss in the first leg but turned things around in stunning fashion on home soil, beating Celtic 4-0 on the night to secure a 4-2 win on aggregate.

Maguire was one of the goal scorers, bagging the last goal of the game with a powerful low drive to compound Celtic’s misery and secure progression for the Dutch side.

It was arguably the biggest moment of his career and, according to teammate Leroy George, something he continues to bring up to this day.

“I play with Barry Maguire at GVVV. He’s a very good guy. He often brags about Celtic,” he told Utrecht TV.

“Coincidentally, I recently talked to him about the fact that he played that Europa League match there. We often talk about our period at FC Utrecht. Those are great moments.”
