Back in December 2019, the Spanish media reported Leicester City’s chase for winger Ibai Gomez.
The Spaniard was playing for Alavés at the time, and despite the Foxes’ effort to bring him to the Premier League, he ended up making a move to his former club Athletic Bilbao.
Gomez himself made it clear at the time that he had the opportunity to move to the Premier League, with the local media pointing out Leicester City and Leeds United as the main suitors.
The reason why this subject is back is that the 33-year-old has now retired. He’d been playing for Santutxu in Spain and suddenly announced he’d b e stopping his career.
He then gave DOTB a long interview, and as El Desmarque today features the main quotes of that conversation, the potential move to Leicester City is mentioned.
The website recalls that Gomez’s representative revealed it was the Foxes who tried to take him to the Premier League, and the player now agrees that he could have moved to England.
“There was an option, and for money I would have gone there,” said Ibai Gomez.
The winger knew Athletic Bilbao had been struggling, and still went there.
“At home, Athletic is religion. For money I would have gone to England, which is where I had options to go together with Athletic after Alavés. Everything I have done and said, I have done from the heart.”
