Manchester City were heavily linked with a move for Juventus’ Andrea Cambiaso in the winter transfer window.

At one point, it seemed as if the Citizens would land the Italy international, but they decided to sign Nico Gonzalez from Porto, which made covering the Cambiaso move difficult.

The versatile full-back starred for the Old Lady in their 2-0 win in Serie A over Hellas Verona yesterday.

After the game, he was asked by reporters about how his January transfer window was and he spoke about the Manchester City links.

He said, as relayed by Calciomercato.it: “I’m better now, my ankle has been giving me problems since December 7th and I underestimated it a bit. Physically I’m fine now. In January I was a bit unlucky: while I was out, there were those transfer rumours.”

The Italy international also insisted that he was never disturbed by the transfer rumours and was always focused on Juve.

He said: “An outsider would think that my head is elsewhere, but my problem was my ankle and not other situations.”

There have been indications that Manchester City will come back in for the defender in the summer, with Pep Guardiola quite keen on Cambiaso.

Therefore, they will hope he stays fit in the second half of the season, so that the English champions do not have any difficulties in coming back for him in the summer.

So far this season, Cambiaso has played 33 times in all competitions and has two goals to his name. He has shown a lot of versatility across the field, also showcasing an ability to invert into midfield while playing at full-back.

Considering that, it is easy to see why Guardiola wants him at the Etihad.
